Ingredients

  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tsp soda

Instructions

  • Cream shortening and sugar; add unbeaten egg and blend in molasses.
  • Mix all spices, flour and salt.
  • Dissolve soda in hot water and alternately mix dry ingredients and soda-water mixture into shortening mixture.
  • Chill dough and drop by teaspoonfulls.
  • Bake at 350°.

Notes

May be frosted with powdered sugar frosting.
